Academic Practices
PowerSchool
All students and parents/guardians have access to PowerSchool, an electronic database that provides real-time information regarding student attendance, current progress and historical grades. Student and parent/guardian PowerSchool login information is given by the School Counseling Office. Questions regarding schedules, historical grades, attendance, etc. should be directed to the student’s school counselor. Questions regarding current grades and assignments should be directed to the student’s teacher.
The PowerSchool student and parent portal link can be found on the Plumb Hill Middle School website.
The PowerSchool Mobile App provides on-the-go visibility to assignments, grades, comments, and student progress from any iOS or Android device.
Assessment
Students are assessed in the following ways:
Formative Assessments: Used to monitor student learning progress during instruction and provide feedback to both the student and the teacher. Examples include quizzes, homework assignments, class discussions, and in-class activities. In middle school, formative grading helps teachers understand where students are struggling and where they need additional support.
Summative Assessments: Administered at the end of a learning period to evaluate student learning outcomes and mastery of content and skills. Examples include unit tests, final exams, projects, and research papers. In middle school, summative grading is used to determine students' overall understanding of the material and their readiness to progress to the next level.
Process Assessments: Focuses on evaluating students' ability to engage in and complete tasks over time. It emphasizes the journey of learning rather than just the final product. Process grading can include criteria such as effort, persistence, problem-solving skills, and collaboration. In middle school, process grading encourages students to develop important skills and habits that contribute to their academic and personal growth.
